At the pinnacle of open world exploration sits Subnautica. It is a game that is a masterclass in open world story telling, and is perhaps one of the most immersive games to date.
The feeling of exploring a deep sea cave, the panic inducing lack of oxygen, and the traumatic horror of encountering your first leviathan class creature may all seem like negatives, yet you find yourself wanting more. For every heart pounding moment of adrenaline, there is a still moment of beauty in appreciating the (occasionally) serene waters of Subnautica.
The plot and mystery of the world is also immediately engaging and keeps you wanting to know more right up until the end, the lore and world building is nearly as deep as its oceans themselves, and while the writing may not be flawless it makes for a wonderful experience throughout the game.
